The Sacrament of Confirmation
Children in Year 6, who are practising Catholics receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. They learn to grow in faith whilst considering the role of the Disciple.
The Bishop confirms the children.
And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit". (John 20:22)
"You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses."
Acts 1:8
In Confirmation, young people are sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit, strengthening the grace they first received at Baptism. They are called to live out their faith with courage and to be witnesses to Christ in the world.
St Dunstan's Parish, parents and school work together to ensure that our Year 6 children are ready for the Sacrament of Confirmation.
As part of their preparation programme:
- In-school sessions – in school, our Year 6 pupils take part in a series of Confirmation sessions using the Archdiocese of Birmingham's teaching resources. These help the children to deepen their understanding of the Sacrament, the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and what it means to live as a confirmed member of the Church.
- Family Masses – children and their families are warmly welcomed to a series of Family Masses on Saturday evenings at 4.00pm. Following Mass, there are preparation sessions with parishioners and Father John.
- Confirmation Retreat Day – Dan and Emily from One Life Music host an annual retreat day for our Year 6 pupils alongside pupils from St Dunstan's School. It is a joyful day of music, prayer and reflection that helps the children explore what it means to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
- Whole School Confirmation Celebration Mass – after receiving the Sacrament, our Year 6 pupils celebrate with the whole school community, giving thanks for this important moment in their lives of faith.
We are so proud of our Year 6 children as they say "yes" to God and continue their journey of faith as confirmed members of the Church.
