Nurture Rooms

We have three nurture rooms in our school - The Rainbow Room and The Peace Room. They are rooms designed to support the social and emotional needs of our children. Children can go to these rooms if they need to regulate how they are feeling and have some time out of the classroom. The adults in both rooms use focused intervention strategies to support the children and provide them with the tools necessary to feel safe, secure and happy with the aim of helping them to get back into the classroom. They are hubs of learning which helps to provide the necessary help to remove the barriers to learning. Teachers signpost children in their class who they feel may need the additional support.

Rainbow Room

Mrs Doherty (pastoral support) takes groups of children out to support them with any friendships issues they are having and helps to develop their confidence and sense of self-worth by taking part in a variety of activities to support their well-being. This may include social stories, discussions and restorative conversations with their peers.

Peace Room

The Peace Room offers a safe space for children to talk if they want to and helps them with strategies in coping with challenges they may face in their lives. Children work in very small groups in Reception and KS1 to build secure attachment with trusted adults in this space.

On Tuesdays Mrs Fellingham (our behaviour specialist and children's counsellor) supports children with their mental health and well-being.

Harmony Room

The Harmony Room offers a safe space for children in Key Stage 2 who need time and space to regulate their emotions. It also provides a safe space for pupils who need movement breaks in order to help them learn. We are committed to teaching children how to recognise and manage their emotions effectively.

The Zones of Regulation categorise emotions into four distinct zones:

  1. Blue Zone: Feelings like sadness, tiredness, or boredom fall into this category. When in the Blue Zone, a child might need to be energised to be ready to learn.
  2. Green Zone: This is the optimal zone for learning, where the child feels happy, focused, and ready to learn.
  3. Yellow Zone: Emotions like frustration, excitement, or nervousness. While the child is not entirely out of control, there's some alert to proceed with caution.
  4. Red Zone: This zone identifies heightened emotional states such as anger or terror. Here, the child is out of control and needs tools to calm down.
