Phonics plays a vital role in your child’s reading development, particularly at this important stage of their education. In Year 1, children build on their early phonics knowledge to help them read words accurately and confidently, supporting both their reading fluency and comprehension. Throughout the year, children will continue to learn new sounds and practise blending these sounds to read words. In June 2026, all Year 1 pupils will take part in the national Phonics Screening Check, which assesses their ability to read a range of real and nonsense (alien) words using the phonics they have been taught. Please see the sounds the children will be learning below. It is imperative that you read with your child at home as much as possible, preferably daily, at least three times a week, to support their progress and confidence in reading.
